megatsunami
Civilization-ending ocean wave
A megatsunami is an extraordinarily large wave, typically exceeding 100 meters in height, caused by massive displacement events—landslides, volcanic collapses, or asteroid impacts rather than ordinary earthquakes.
The term distinguishes these rare, catastrophic waves from regular tsunamis: A megatsunami could devastate coastlines hundreds of miles away.
The 1958 Lituya Bay event in Alaska, triggered by a rockslide, produced a wave over 500 meters high.
