outback

Remote inland Australia

Outback refers to remote, sparsely populated rural areas, especially the arid interior regions of Australia.

The term evokes vast, dry landscapes far from cities and coastal settlements: They drove for days through the outback.

By extension, any isolated backcountry can be called outback: the Nevada outback. (Capitalized Outback often refers specifically to Australia's interior or the restaurant chain.)
