capital city

Where leaders govern

A capital city is the seat of government for a nation, state, or other political unit—where legislative and administrative functions concentrate.

The term is slightly redundant, since capital alone carries this meaning, but the fuller phrase avoids ambiguity: Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States.

Capital cities often hold symbolic importance beyond their governmental role.
