prelature

High clerical rank

A prelature is the office, jurisdiction, or territory of a prelate—a high-ranking member of the clergy such as a bishop or abbot.

The term also refers collectively to prelates as a group.

In Catholic usage, a personal prelature like Opus Dei has jurisdiction over persons rather than territory: He joined the prelature after university.
