vicariate
Delegated ecclesiastical territory
A vicariate is a district or jurisdiction under the authority of a vicar—a deputy or representative of a higher ecclesiastical authority.
In the Roman Catholic Church, a vicariate is typically a territory not yet established as a diocese, administered by a vicar apostolic on behalf of the Pope: The vicariate was elevated to diocese status in 1952.
The term also refers to the office or tenure of a vicar.
