procurator

Ancient Roman official

A procurator is an agent or representative authorized to act on another's behalf, particularly in legal or financial matters.

In ancient Rome, procurators were imperial officials who managed provincial finances or administered smaller territories: Pontius Pilate served as procurator of Judea.

The term survives in some European legal systems for certain public prosecutors or fiscal officers.
