canton

Flag's upper corner

A canton is a political subdivision, most associated with Switzerland, where the country is divided into twenty-six semi-autonomous cantons.

More generally, canton can mean any small territorial district.

In heraldry, a canton is a small square in the corner of a shield—the American flag's blue field with stars occupies the canton position.

The Swiss canton of Geneva borders France. (Capitalized Canton refers to the Chinese city now called Guangzhou.)
