provinces
Country's administrative regions
Provinces are administrative divisions of a country, typically the primary subdivision below the national level—comparable to states in the United States.
Canada has provinces; China has provinces.
In a broader sense, the provinces means areas outside the capital or major cities: She moved from Paris to the provinces.
This usage often carries connotations of being less sophisticated or cosmopolitan.
