suffragan
Deputy to diocesan
A suffragan is a bishop subordinate to a metropolitan or archbishop, or one appointed to assist a diocesan bishop without the right of succession.
The term appears almost exclusively in discussions of church hierarchy and ecclesiastical organization: The archbishop convened his suffragans for the synod.
As an adjective, suffragan describes this subordinate relationship: a suffragan see.
