engines
They drive vehicles
Engines are machines that convert energy into motion.
The term originally meant any mechanical device (as in siege engines or engines of war), but now usually refers to motors that power vehicles or equipment: car engine, jet engine, search engine.
A steam engine converts heat to mechanical force.
A fire engine is the truck, not just its motor.
Figuratively, something can be an engine of change or growth—a driving force.
