Pumpkin's garden cousin
Squash covers two unrelated words.
One is a gourd-like vegetable with firm flesh and a thick rind, including varieties like butternut, acorn, and zucchini.
The other squash means to crush or compress something flat, or to suppress or silence: The regime squashed the rebellion before it could spread.
Squash is also a racket sport played in an enclosed court, named for the soft, squashable ball used.
As a noun, a squash can be a crowded situation: It was a tight squash getting everyone into the elevator.
