lobby

Hotel waiting area

A lobby is an entrance hall or waiting area, especially in hotels, theaters, or office buildings: We'll meet in the hotel lobby.

The term extends to groups that try to influence legislators or officials—from the practice of approaching politicians in legislative lobbies.

To lobby is to attempt such influence: Environmental groups lobbied Congress for stricter emissions standards.

A lobbyist does this professionally.
