advocate

Speaks for others

Advocate has two pronunciations that distinguish the noun from the verb.

The verb has a long ‘a’ in the last syllable.

To advocate something, or advocate for something, is to promote it and work for it to succeed or prevail: They advocated the use of force. The organization advocates for pay equality.

An advocate (unstressed vowel in the last syllable) is someone who promotes a particular idea, cause, or course of action: Sojourner Truth was a women’s rights advocate.

In legal contexts an advocate is someone who pleads the cause of another.
