poll

Gather public sentiment

Poll originally meant head, and by extension, person, so a poll tax would be a tax on every person.

Now poll is used much more in association with surveys of opinion and elections.

If you take a poll, you solicit opinions on some questions; to poll people means the same thing.

Sometimes, poll is just a variant in journalism for election.

Poll can also designate the act or place of voting: Today, voters go to the polls.
