pollard
Trunk-cut regrowth tree
A pollard is a tree that has been cut back to the trunk to encourage dense growth of new branches, a traditional technique for producing poles and firewood without killing the tree.
The verb means to cut a tree in this way: The willows along the canal had been pollarded for centuries.
Pollard also refers to an animal, especially a deer or sheep, that has lost or shed its horns. (Capitalized Pollard is a surname.)
