scalp

Where hair grows

The scalp is the skin covering the top and back of the head, where hair typically grows.

Historically, some cultures removed enemies' scalps as trophies—to scalp someone was to cut away this skin.

The verb now means to resell tickets at inflated prices: Scalpers were selling tickets for three times face value outside the stadium.

To scalp can also mean to make small, quick profits through frequent trades.
