tympan
Press's packing sheet
A tympan is a frame covered with parchment or cloth, used in letterpress printing to cushion the paper against the type.
The term comes from the same root as tympanum (eardrum), suggesting a stretched membrane.
In architecture, tympan can refer to a tympanum—the triangular or semicircular space within a pediment or above a doorway.
