typebar
Ribbon-striking type arm
A typebar is the metal arm in a manual typewriter that carries a letter or character at its striking end.
When a key is pressed, the corresponding typebar swings up to hit the ribbon against the paper, leaving an inked impression.
Multiple typebars arranged in a basket could jam together if struck too quickly in succession, which led to the QWERTY keyboard layout designed to slow typists down and prevent such collisions.
