dot matrix printer

Impact pixel printer

A dot matrix printer is a type of impact printer that forms characters and images by striking an ink ribbon with a grid of tiny pins, leaving patterns of dots on paper.

Common from the 1970s through 1990s, they were noisy but durable and could print on multipart carbon forms.

Now largely obsolete, replaced by inkjet and laser printers, though still used for specialized applications requiring carbon copies.
