dot matrix

Pointillist printing pattern

Dot matrix describes a method of forming images or text from patterns of tiny dots arranged in a grid.

The term most often refers to dot matrix printers, which dominated office printing in the 1980s and early 1990s, producing characters by striking an ink ribbon through a grid of pins: The old dot matrix printer was loud but reliable.

The technique also applies to displays and signage where pixels or LEDs form characters from dot patterns.
