ink ribbon
Printer's fabric strip
An ink ribbon is a strip of fabric or plastic coated with ink, wound on spools and used in typewriters, dot-matrix printers, and similar impact machines.
The print mechanism strikes through the ribbon to transfer ink onto paper.
I need to replace the ink ribbon—the type is getting faint.
Largely obsolete with the rise of inkjet and laser printing.
