papaya
Orange-fleshed tropical fruit
Papaya is a large tropical fruit with orange flesh, black seeds, and a soft, butter-like texture when ripe.
The fruit grows on a tall, palm-like tree native to Central America but now cultivated throughout the tropics.
Papaya is eaten fresh, added to smoothies, or used in cooking—green papaya appears in Southeast Asian salads.
The enzyme papain, extracted from papaya, is used as a meat tenderizer.
