grafting
Fusing plant parts
Grafting is joining plant tissue from one specimen to another so they grow as one—typically attaching a cutting (the scion) to an established root system (the rootstock).
Orchardists graft to propagate fruit varieties that won't breed true from seed.
The technique extends metaphorically: grafting new ideas onto old traditions.
In medicine, grafting transfers tissue—skin grafts cover burns.
In British slang, grafting means working hard, especially at seduction: He's been grafting on her all night.
