passionfruit

Wrinkled purple pod

Passionfruit is a tropical fruit with a tough outer rind and a soft, seed-filled interior of aromatic, tangy pulp.

The flavor is intensely sweet-tart, making it popular in juices, desserts, and cocktails.

The name comes from the passion flower vine on which it grows—so called because missionaries saw in its elaborate blooms symbols of Christ's crucifixion.

The pavlova was topped with fresh passionfruit.
