rambutan

Hairy Asian fruit

Rambutan is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, about the size of a golf ball, with a red or yellow skin covered in soft, hair-like spines.

The name comes from a Malay word meaning hairy.

Inside the leathery rind is translucent, juicy flesh similar to lychee, surrounding a single seed: We picked up some rambutans at the Asian market.
