lieutenant governor
Second-in-command official
A lieutenant governor is the second-ranking executive official in a U.S. state government, serving directly below the governor.
In most states, the lieutenant governor assumes the governorship if that office becomes vacant and may preside over the state senate.
The position varies significantly by state—some lieutenant governors have substantial duties while others hold largely ceremonial roles.
In Canada, a lieutenant governor represents the Crown in each province.
The lieutenant governor broke the tie vote in the senate.
