governors

Heads of states

Governors is the plural of governor—those who govern.

Most often these are elected chief executives of states or provinces: The governors met to discuss the new federal policy.

A governor can also be a device that regulates speed or flow, as in an engine governor that prevents overspeeding.

In institutional contexts, a board of governors oversees an organization: The Federal Reserve's board of governors sets monetary policy.
