adjutant

Commander's administrative assistant

An adjutant is a military officer who assists a commanding officer with administrative duties—correspondence, orders, records.

The role is essentially that of an executive assistant in uniform.

Outside military contexts, adjutant occasionally describes any official helper or deputy.

The adjutant stork, a large Asian scavenger bird, supposedly got its name from its stiff, military bearing.
