head of government
National leadership position
A head of government is the person who leads a country's executive branch and directs its day-to-day administration.
This role is distinct from head of state, though some systems combine both in one office—the U.S. president is both, while the U.K. separates them between prime minister and monarch.
The head of government typically holds the most political power, setting policy agendas and leading the cabinet.
The prime minister serves as head of government in most parliamentary democracies.
