running mate
Vice presidential candidate
A running mate is a candidate for the lesser of two linked political offices, especially the vice-presidential candidate on a presidential ticket.
The term comes from horse racing, where a running mate was a horse entered in a race to set the pace for a stablemate.
In politics, the running mate is chosen to complement the main candidate: She announced her running mate at the convention.
The term occasionally extends to any close partner in an endeavor.
