caretaker

Tends others' property

A caretaker looks after something in the owner's absence or incapacity—a property, an estate, a person.

In British English, a caretaker maintains a building; Americans would say janitor or custodian.

As an adjective, caretaker describes someone holding a position temporarily until a permanent replacement is found: a caretaker government, a caretaker manager.
