executive orders
White House mandates
Executive orders are directives issued by a president (or governor) that carry the force of law within the executive branch.
They instruct federal agencies on how to implement policy without requiring congressional approval: The president signed an executive order banning the practice.
Executive orders can be challenged in court or reversed by subsequent administrations, making them less durable than legislation.
