Units within wholes

Divisions are parts created by dividing—whether splitting a whole into pieces or organizing something into categories.

A company has divisions, an army has divisions, a sports league has divisions.

Division also names the act of dividing or the state of being divided: Deep divisions remain over immigration policy.

Mathematical division separates a number into equal parts.

The word often carries connotations of separation or discord: partisan divisions, divisions within the party.
