field artillery
Wheeled battlefield guns
Field artillery refers to mobile cannons and similar heavy weapons designed to support ground troops in battle, as opposed to fixed fortifications or naval guns.
The guns are mounted on wheeled carriages or tracked vehicles, allowing repositioning as combat situations change.
Field artillery units fire explosive shells at enemy positions from behind friendly lines: The field artillery opened up at dawn, softening the enemy defenses before the infantry advanced.
