infantry charge
Soldiers advance running
An infantry charge is a direct assault by foot soldiers rushing toward enemy positions, typically at a run and often with bayonets fixed.
The tactic relies on speed and momentum to close distance before defensive fire can break the attack.
Once central to warfare, massed infantry charges became increasingly suicidal against modern weaponry: Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg resulted in catastrophic losses.
The term now often evokes outdated military romanticism or desperate last-ditch attacks.
