Overwatch is a position of armed surveillance providing cover for troops moving through dangerous terrain, or the act of maintaining such a position: One squad advances while another provides overwatch.
The term comes from military tactics but has spread to gaming and security contexts.
To overwatch is to guard from an elevated or protected vantage point.
