sapper

Military demolition specialist

A sapper is a military engineer who builds fortifications, lays or clears mines, and handles demolitions.

The term comes from digging saps—trenches used to approach enemy positions.

Sappers do the dangerous groundwork of combat engineering: The sappers cleared a path through the minefield.

In British Commonwealth forces, sapper is also the lowest enlisted rank in engineer units.
