inbreeding
Relatives producing offspring
Inbreeding is reproduction between closely related individuals—siblings, cousins, or parent and offspring.
In animal husbandry, controlled inbreeding can fix desirable traits, but it also concentrates harmful recessive genes, leading to reduced fitness called inbreeding depression.
The term extends figuratively to any closed system that suffers from lack of outside influence: The department's intellectual inbreeding has made it resistant to new ideas.
