interbreeding
Mating across varieties
Interbreeding is sexual reproduction between different varieties, breeds, or closely related species.
The term appears in discussions of genetics and conservation: Interbreeding between wolves and dogs produces fertile offspring.
It can also describe mixing between distinct human populations: centuries of interbreeding among settlers and indigenous peoples.
The verb is interbreed.
