stigma

Mark of disgrace

Stigma is a mark of disgrace or shame that sets someone apart.

A person may carry the stigma of a criminal record, a mental illness, or poverty.

To stigmatize is to brand someone with such disapproval: Addiction is often stigmatized rather than treated as a health issue.

In botany, the stigma is the tip of a flower's pistil that receives pollen.

Plural: stigmas or stigmata.

The latter form especially applies to marks resembling Christ's crucifixion wounds, believed by some to appear miraculously on the devout.
