outcrossing
Breeding unrelated individuals
Outcrossing is breeding between unrelated or distantly related individuals within the same species.
Breeders use it to introduce genetic diversity and reduce the harmful effects of inbreeding: Outcrossing helped restore vigor to the declining population.
The practice is common in agriculture, animal husbandry, and conservation programs.
The verb is outcross.
