exogamy

Wedding outside kin

Exogamy is the practice or rule of marrying outside one's own group—whether tribe, clan, caste, or community.

The term appears in anthropology and sociology to describe marriage customs that require seeking partners from other social units: The village practiced strict exogamy, with brides always coming from neighboring settlements.

The opposite is endogamy, marrying within one's group.
