goiter

Thyroid gland enlargement

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, visible as a swelling at the front of the neck.

Goiters can result from iodine deficiency, thyroid disease, or other conditions affecting hormone production.

Before iodized salt became common, goiters were widespread in regions with iodine-poor soil: She noticed a goiter developing on her neck.
