polyp

Benign tissue outgrowth

A polyp is a small growth that protrudes from a mucous membrane, typically found in the nose, colon, or uterus.

Most polyps are benign, but some types—particularly in the colon—can develop into cancer, which is why doctors recommend screening and removal.

In marine biology, a polyp is also the cylindrical body form of certain invertebrates like coral and sea anemones, with a mouth surrounded by tentacles at one end.

The colonoscopy revealed several polyps that were removed for biopsy.
