fullerene

Hollow carbon sphere

Fullerene is a molecule composed entirely of carbon atoms arranged in a hollow structure—spheres, tubes, or other closed shapes.

The most famous is buckminsterfullerene, a soccer-ball-shaped molecule of 60 carbon atoms, nicknamed the buckyball.

Carbon nanotubes are cylindrical fullerenes.

These structures have applications in materials science and nanotechnology.
