plumbago

Carbon for pencils

Plumbago is graphite, the soft carbon mineral used in pencils and lubricants—so named because it was once confused with lead ore.

The word also refers to a genus of flowering plants with blue, white, or pink blossoms, commonly called leadwort: The plumbago hedge bloomed all summer.
