tempera

Egg-bound pigment

Tempera is a painting technique using pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder, traditionally egg yolk.

It dries quickly to a matte finish and was the dominant medium for panel painting before oils became standard in the Renaissance.

The term also refers to paintings made this way: a medieval tempera on wood.

Modern tempera paints, as in children's art supplies, use different binders but share the name.
