pine tar
Resinous wood extract
Pine tar is a dark, sticky substance produced by heating pine wood in the absence of air.
It has traditional uses as a wood preservative, rope sealant, and folk remedy for skin conditions.
In baseball, pine tar improves grip on bat handles; the amount permitted is regulated, and its illegal use on pitchers' hands to doctor the ball has sparked controversy: He was ejected for having pine tar on his glove.
