tar
File packaging utility
Tar is a thick, dark, sticky substance derived from organic materials like coal, wood, or petroleum.
It's used for waterproofing and paving: The roofers spread hot tar over the surface.
Cigarette tar refers to the residue that accumulates in lungs.
To tar someone is to coat them with tar—historically as punishment (tarred and feathered)—or to damage their reputation: Don't tar us all with the same brush.
A tar is also old-fashioned slang for a sailor.
