beryl
Aquamarine's mineral family
Beryl is a mineral that occurs in various colors and forms the basis for several gemstones.
In its pure state, beryl is colorless, but impurities create the green of emerald, the blue of aquamarine, and the pink of morganite.
The word appears most often in geology and gemology contexts: The mine produced beryl specimens of exceptional clarity. (Capitalized Beryl is a given name.)
